Best tracks for getting high: What the cool kids are listening to

When it comes to getting high and feeling the rhythm, music and marijuana go together like peanut butter and jelly. But are you bored of Bob Marley hogging the spotlight on every playlist for stoners? Lucky for you, WEEDAR has analyzed 5,506 tracks from twenty popular marijuana-inspired playlists on Spotify and ranked the most listened-to tracks.

Snoop Dogg may be the OG, but he isn’t the only big name in the game. The new wave of stoners has its own musical heroes, and we’ve got the numbers to prove it. So pack that bowl, grab some munchies, and dive into the top tunes to spark up to!

The top three intoxicating tracks

every stoner has on repeat

1. Roddy Ricch “The Box”: >1.6bn plays

It’s been over three years since Roddy Ricch’s breakout track, “The Box '', climbed the charts, yet it still hits just as hard as the first time we heard it. Its repetitive beat and clear flow provides the perfect background track, whether you want a song to bop your head to or something to help you zone out and get lost in your thoughts — and it’s proven to be highly addictive, having amassed over 1.6 billion plays on Spotify, taking the top spot on the weed community’s music charts.

2. Childish Gambino “Redbone”: >1.3bn plays

Childish Gambino may be best known for his hard-hitting songs such as “This is America”, but “Redbone'' is undoubtedly his biggest hit when it comes to lighting up a room. A soulful and relaxing melody combined with trippy, psychedelic undertones — If weed had a sound, this would be it. With its dreamy vocals and lyrics that touch on the topics of love and trust, it’s a feelgood classic and the perfect opener to any weed playlist, setting the right mood for those positive, “in your feelings” kind of smoke sessions.

3. Travis Scott “Highest In The Room”: > 1.3bn plays

Best known for his psychedelic style of rap, characterized by deep basslines and endless synthesizers, it’s no wonder Travis Scott’s music is held in high regard among weed lovers. None more so than “Highest In The Room”, which has racked up almost 1.4 billion plays on Spotify since its release in 2019. Playing on the sense of escapism and euphoria that comes with getting high, Travis Scott’s hit song resonates with weed smokers, reminding us of the task at hand as we take a toke: heightening our senses, unlocking our minds and transcending reality.

Weed serves a diverse range of tastes and you will undoubtedly find popular tracks inspired by our favorite plant in almost every genre, from Mac DeMarco’s indie hit “Chamber of Reflection” to Krono’s EDM remix of Aaron Smith’s “Dancin”. However, nothing hit the high note among those that appreciate the green stuff like rap, hip-hop and R&B — with all 15 of the most popular songs among weed smokers today falling within those genres.

Today’s generation may prefer Roddy Ricch and Childish Gambino to weed culture trailblazers such as Bob Dylan and Snoop Dogg, but some songs have transcended time itself and remain permanently high on weed smokers’ playlists. No song featured more than Afroman’s “Because I Got High” — a tune that resonates with smokers of all ages — on all of the playlists WEEDAR analyzed. Impressively, The Toyes’ “Smoke Two Joints” also remains stuck in stoners’ minds, despite four decades having passed since its release. The likes of A$AP Rocky and Metro Boomin have undoubtedly earned their place on our weed playlists, but those first highs (supported by the h-icons of the past) will never be topped.

Methodology: To create the study, we examined 5,506 tracks from twenty popular marijuana playlists on Spotify, and ranked each song by number of streams.
